Testimonials
Stephen has been a pleasure to work with and has been an impressive Acting Head of Music over the past year. He has been willing, flexible and professional at all times, and always works to a very high standard. Stephen has embraced and contributed to all areas of school life. His gentle and efficient manner has enabled him to gain the respect of the whole Parkgate community. Stephen’s lessons are engaging and he teaches with energy and enthusiasm. Stephen is highly creative and has also used initiative to play an active role in whole school and cross-curricular events. For example, Stephen wrote an original song for Anti-Bullying Week and this was professionally recorded and produced, featuring every pupil in the School. Stephen has also arranged a wide variety of pieces, putting together musical arrangements for concerts and assemblies, involving a live band, which have been hugely popular with pupils and parents alike. Stephen has also worked hard to develop our Choir, inspiring the pupils to perform to the very best of their ability and encouraging them to sing complex pieces, including in four-part harmony. His musical choices have been ambitious and well-tailored to the pupils and to each specific event and audience. Stephen has also been adept at managing and overseeing our team of peripatetic musicians, and he has strong administrative skills in running the Department. 65% of pupils at Parkgate House receive one-to-one instrumental or singing lessons through the school, and approximately a quarter receive tuition in more than one instrument (piano, guitar, violin, harp, chanter and singing). ABRSM results have been outstanding – in the most recent exams, pupils achieved 100% pass rate, with 96% achieving Distinction and/or Merit.

Throughout my six years working with Stephen at The UCL Academy, he proved himself to be an excellent and engaging music teacher. As well as teaching classroom music lessons to children ages 11-16, Stephen taught one-to-one instrumental and singing lessons to support KS3 students with performances, and GCSE and A-level Music students with their practical exams. Stephen also went above and beyond to prepare pupils for music scholarships to colleges including BIMM Institute, The BRIT School and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, as well as competitions such as West End Calling and The Voice UK. On top of this, Stephen took on the role of Musical Director for the annual school productions, leading music rehearsals for the cast and managing the live band of professional musicians. Stephen founded the Junior Choir, Senior A-Cappella Group and Full Academy Choir, consisting of over 50 students across 7 different year groups, and arranged this choir ahead of the Camden Music Festival held at Royal Albert Hall in 2020 & 2023. Stephen was adored by all of his students and he was dearly missed when he moved on to become Head of Music at Parkgate House School.
